Definition

A Bourdon tube pressure gauge is a device used to measure the pressure of gases or liquids. It consists of a curved, hollow tube (the Bourdon tube) which is sealed at one end and connected to the pressure source at the other. When pressure is applied, the tube tends to straighten due to the pressure differential between the inside and the outside of the tube. This mechanical deformation is then translated into a rotational movement through a geared mechanism, which moves the needle on the gauge dial to indicate the pressure reading.
